Financial Literacy and Capabilities Learning - Class Auction

Today Mike Hall came into Rm 10 to facilitate our class auction. We had a lot of fun with 25 items up for auction. Some students had a very healthy bank balance allowing them to purchase more than one item. Interest was generated through efficient use of savings accounts. Property investment also generated rent to help with mortgage repayments. Our 6 weeks of learning concluded today with some very powerful aspects. Well done Rm 10 for 100% commitment with this learning module. I am looking forward to reading your 'Big Think' enquiries that you have now completed.

Duane Kale - Assembly Guest Speaker

"Never give up and aspire to achieve" was the key message delivered at assembly by three-time Paralympic gold medallist, & Vice President of the International Paralympic Committee, Duane Kale.
"It won't matter, 100 years from now, what your bank account balance was, what sort of house you lived in, or what sort of car you drove. I think the most important thing is to make a difference to yourself but also make a difference to others."  Thank you for sharing your inspirational story with us Duane & reminding us of our values, especially our value of resilience.

Science Badges - Term 4

It is exciting to note that 16 students in Rm 10 have chosen to work on completing a science badge this term. This is a big time commitment predominantly out of school hours but there is enormous motivation from Rm 10 students. Kennedy brought in her cottage cheese last Wednesday that she had made at home. She is completing learning tasks to complete her food technology science badge. Another example of the agentic learners in our class that are taking charge and driving their learning. I am a super proud teacher!

Kids Voting 2017 - Politics

Today, we cast our vote in Rm 10! We had some research to do into what policies different parties were campaigning with for the upcoming 2017 election. The website www.onthefence.co.nz asked us a series of questions abut what we believe is important in our country we live in.  It challenged our beliefs, mindset and values we consider important. Discussing how the party and electorate vote works enlightened us about who our local candidate could be, (not necessarily in the party we feel we best align to). So here are Rm 10's results that will be collated with the entire HNI population next week...

Party Vote
NZ First 1, Conservative 0, Labour Party 5, Green Party 4, National Party 10, Act 0, Ban 1080 1, Maori Party 1, NZ Outdoors Party 1, The Opportunities Party 2.

Electorate Vote
Joe Kairau 3, Roger Larkins 0, Anna Lork 9, Chris Perley 3, Dick Ryan 1, Allister Tosh 0 & Lawrence Yule 10

HNI's New Mural

Nicole has been busy after lunch for the past couple of weeks. She has been creating a masterpiece that will be on display at HNI very shortly with two other year 7 students.  The concept, planning, design and aesthetics are amazing and it has turned out exceptionally well.

Speeches 2017

This years task was to plan, prepare and deliver a persuasive speech about our term 3 inquiry topic; Healthy Bodies, Strong Minds. The quality of speeches this year was exemplary and we all enjoyed listening to the wide range of topics that were chosen. Congratulations to Kennedy and Adam who will move forward to the 'Sheppard finals' next Tuesday. Highly Commended 2017; Lily, Evan, Jordan, Shamus & Imogen. Click on our blogs to read our speech and our completed reflection.

Stereotypes

Do stereotypes exist in Rm 10? Today we moved around the walls in our classroom examining closely photos of people we had never met before. Our challenge was to create a profile of that person based on what we could see. Age, marital status, occupation, likes and dislikes were some aspects we had to consider. After creating our profile, we read the actual profile of very real people. The dangers of stereotyping include;
·         you judge people unfairly
·         you might miss out on a possible friendship
·         you might patronise people or be frightened of them
·         you might treat them unfairly
·         you would appear ignorant.

Rm 10 Lunch Time Sport

It was a gorgeous day to be outside for lunch time sports Today was our second game for the term and touch wood... we are on a winning streak so far! Many thanks to Luca and Brooke who are leading our class with coordinating this activity. Bring on the end of the term to see who the Term 3 Handball champions are going to be!

Watercolours Art Workshop

Six Rm 10 students were incredibly lucky to have Kristina Boese come into class today to engage in a watercolours workshop. Kristina brought lots of her artworks that she had created and explained a little more about where she draws inspiration and her technique for creating an abstract representation. The students then had two objects to choose from - a vase of daffodils or a bunch of berries. All of the students enjoyed sketching what they could see and then mixing the colours. There art work turned out amazing and they all throughly enjoyed their session.

Hillmac Speech Competition - 2017

Hillmac Speech Competition - 2017

6 students from Rm 10 have chosen to participate in the Hillmac Speech competition for 2017. The brief was to plan and present a speech on natural hazards. All 6 students chose completely different topic for their speech. Only one can go through to the National Aquarium to present their speech later on in September. Who will it be?

Stay Safe While Online

Last week we reviewed how we keep ourselves safe while online. How do we use our device to support our learning? How are we accountable for using the right site at the right time? How do we represent ourselves, our school and our family with pride? At HNI we have x5 rules to consider when we are online. Here are Rm 10's digital footprints that illustrate these.

Oscar - 7 Ways To Become Smarter

Why You Should Play Guitar!

Here is Sameer's passion project video he made. He was inspired with his passion of playing the guitar and creating music to use as his context for learning. He talks about the physical skills required and the accomplishment and sense of achievement that mastering chords, reading music and playing a song can provide. What a high quality video Sameer - be proud of yourself!

Anti-bullying - Sunshine & Savannah

The first two weeks of inquiry learning in Room 10 have been devoted to 'Passion Projects.' Our challenge was to identify something we were passionate about that connected with our term 3 topic of Healthy Bodies, Strong Minds. Savannah and Sunshine have done an exemplary job creating a role play about bullying. NZ has one of the worse rates of reported bullying around the developed world. Here at HNI we are just beginning a revolution to stamp this out and no longer tolerate what has become a societal norm. People are bullied for a multitude of reasons - gender, ethnicity, hair colour, body image and sometimes for no apparent reason at all. What do you think about bullying? Have you ever been bullied? How does the victim stand up to the bully and what strategies are powerful? Watch this short clip to ponder these questions in more detail. Well done Savannah and Sunshine - you are always engaged and motivated learners within Rm 10!

Science Fair 2017

The opportunity to complete a science fair exhibit this year was presented to Rm 10 at the start of term 2. A massive congratulations to Oscar and Lily who have been through the investigative process of enquiring into questions and wonderings of significance. It is a lengthy scientific process and these two students have managed themselves exceptionally to meet the deadline with when these needed to be submitted. 'Heat The Treat' - Lily and 'Milk Mania' - Oscar are two exhibits in the fair to look out for when viewing!

Cycle 2 Student Leaders - Rm 10

An enormous congratulations to Sameer and Imogen who are Rm 10 class councillors. Also to Brooke and Luca who are our sports captains. Leadership roles are both challenging and rewarding and these students have put themselves forward to do their very best in these roles. I know the rest of Rm 10 will support and encourage them in their roles and their time on the student council will be invaluable. Ka mau te wehi koutou!

Hillmac Speech Competition

This week we had Anna Coleman come and visit a group of students who have decided to pursue the Hillmac speech competition. The speech topic is around natural disasters and a wide range of topics have been initiated from Rm 10 students. Adam; heat waves and blizzards, Oscar; acid rain, Imogen; Napier 1931 earthquake, Shamus; smog pollution, Zahra; coastal erosion, Jordan; hurricanes & Giovanni; Tsunami. One person from HNI will be going forward to present their speech at the National Aquarium over in Napier on the 14th September. I am super proud of all of the Rm 10 students who put their hand up to be involved with this opportunity!

Bake Sale - Rm 10

Lily, Nicole and Keira held their 'Bake Sale' at HNI today. After the London fire, the girls were motivated to take action and do something to support the families and victims of this catastrophe. Deciding to bake cupcakes, brownie, popcorn and fruit kebabs, they advertised, planned and organised for the event to be a great success. Room 10 came on board and were a great support as well.  Well done ladies on a stellar effort with making this happen. A total of $111 was raised.

Mandarin Game

Te inoi whakamutunga – Closing Karakia

The sun was shining and it was the perfect opportunity to head outdoors for our learning. Jordan, Zahra, Oceania and Kennedy grabbed the chalk and created an enormous word chant of our closing karakia that we were learning. Now that we have our opening/morning karakia mastered, the challenge is to get our one for the end of the day polished as well. In 20 minutes, these learners achieved a lot!

He Karakia
Te inoi whakamutunga – closing prayer
Kia tau ki a tatou katoa,
Te atawhai o to tatou Ariki
o Ihu Karaiti
Me te aroha o te Atua
Me te whiwhingatahitanga
ki te wairua tapu.
Ake, ake ake,
Amine

Nicole Lives, Breathes & Walks our HNI School Values

Here is an example of a young lady in Rm 10 who is a terrific ambassador of our HNI School values. She completed a home-learning task in week 4 which was above and beyond the call of duty. Nicole showed me the receipt and acknowledgement from Starship this morning before school started of the funds raised on behalf of her planning, preparation and execution. Nicole, you are a shining star!

What I am doing :
SERVICE - CHARITY

Identify a charity or great cause to support. Plan a mini-fundraising task where you could raise a small amount of funds for the charity. The SPCA, St John’s, a sports club WHATEVER! Do you plan to sell lemons, bake brownie, organise a raffle? Do keep it on the ‘small side.’

The gameplan:
Me and my dad will make brownies and sell them at  school
To do this we will use the recipe my dad uses for his cafe.
People will come because i will put a notice on the student notices: https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/1gPrweP4WfVE3eaMqOhM1RxXREo5aOOUEd4kmuVD9n6Q/edit

My caratie will be starship hospital.     https://www.starship.org.nz/foundation
I will try to make as much money as possible.

Explanation:
On thursday 25th of may i will sell brownies outside room 10! (with the help of friends)
At lunch eating all through play hopefully i will make the estimated $10 - &25 or more!
The brownies will be 1 dollar and hopefully more than one person will come.
Through the week i will be very busy preparing the brownies and getting the buzz about my sale and my cause (why i’m doing it) as much as i can.
I am sure people will like the brownies for they are delicous ( cause i’ve already tasted some!)

I really hope that people will  come like I said I want to spread the word as much as possible and try give as much money to the starship foundation because at my old primary school  a girl got cancer and got sent there and so do lots of other kids so it's super important that i make some sort of contribution and help even if it's just $25 dollars.
That's why on thursday i try to make as much money as possible and have a lot of fun doing it.
Eg: making brownies, designing posters and selling the brownies with my friends ( the fun  part!).

Kaleb We Are Thinking About You!

Thank you so much to Rm 10 and their families for being so generous with their koha today. We had  mufti day and sausage sizzle to raise funds to support Kaleb and his family whilst he is in Starship hospital. $82.60 was just the gold coins and then we all raced out the door at lunch time to buy sausages. We are a very caring and thoughtful bunch of young adults that thought seriously about supporting a great cause today. Well done Mrs Ellmore and Rm 12 for making this idea become reality!

Self Management/Managing Self - Rm 10 Qualified Learners

Room 10 has 3 super star students that are busy creating a resource for students to think more about managing their own learning. Maverick, Caleb & Blake have created this Powtoon which clearly shows some steps that need careful consideration. They have done a stellar job and I know they too are now using more 'Managing Self' language with all areas of their learning. They are all Powtoon experts so if you need any assistance in learning how to use this presentation tool, don't hesitate to email/contact them.

Before they created their Powtoon, they used coggle to plan their concept map from an initial 'fast and furious' brainstorming session. Coggle is a great web2 tool to use when concept mapping. Check it out!

Tech Challenge - Leaning Tower of Pasta

Todays tech challenge was about being creative with possibilities. We had a packet of spaghetti pasta and a packet of marshmallows. Our brief was to spend 5 minutes planning about structures and different ways of using our resources. We then had to construct a tower in 20 minutes that was as tall as we could possibly make it. Some groups considered the strength of the pasta really well and their plans reflected this. Two groups had an initial plan that did not work out but were able to adapt/modify their design as time ticked by. Congratulations to Lily, Sameer, Sofia and Sunshine who had constructed a tower standing 58cm tall. So who will shine tomorrow with more creative thinking?

Literacy Quiz

Congratulations to our Year 7 team which included Shamus, Ollie and Imogen from Room 10 who participated in the Lit quiz on Friday evening. The team placed 4th out of the 16 teams that were entered. Many thanks to Mrs August for coordinating this event and to everyone that played the initial Kahoot to determine your level of literacy trivia and knowledge. Ka mau te wehi!

Room 10 Passion Projects

Today we had our Room 10 Passion Project presentations. The challenge was to convey to our audience where our passion stemmed from, an idea about a problem that we could creatively solve and an invention to combat that problem or to enhance an existing product. Luca is very keen on bike riding however his parents have concerns when he is on steep terrain. Luca is a dare devil and has come off his bike more than once with the treks and courses that he loves to bike. His innovation was about using a GPS and a sensor to preempt pedalling speed with upcoming and approaching jumps. His level of thinking was very critical and creative and he went about solving a real life problem. I am certain this concept could very easily be turned into reality Luca and would definitely prevent injuries such as yours happening!

Home-learning Tasks - Term 2

There are some amazing people in Room 10 who have really gone above and beyond with their home-learning already this term. Congratulations to Luca and Brooke who were the shining stars for week 1. We had fun celebrating their achievement and being inspired with what is possible when we set our sights high. Here is a copy of Brooke's 'changing the tyre' task she chose for week 2. It is exemplary and I even learnt a trick or two I was not aware of so... thank you Brooke!

Reading Challenge - Hell Pizza #nurture/a/love/of/reading

It is so exciting to see all of the Room 10 learners who continue to make the most of opportunities available to them. Jordan, Kennedy, Shamus, Imogen, Blake, Eden, Ollie, Nicole, Keira, Sunshine and Adam all put their hand up to be involved with 2017 'Hell Reading Challenge.' Quite simply, they need to read 7 chapter books from HNI's library, be able to answer questions about their book and ensure they are keeping up with reading material. After completing 7 books, they can redeem their reading wheel at a Hells pizza brunch within NZ to receive a complementary pizza. Nurturing a love of reading certainly opens so many doors with authors of enjoyment, genres of reading and the ability to balance both reading for enjoyment and to source information. Keep it up people!

Welcome Back To Term 2 #MoversAndShakers/LetsGetShaking#

I hope you have all had a relaxing and energising holiday break. We are kicking off term 2 with an exciting inquiry topic appropriately named, 'Movers and Shakers'.

GLOBAL LEARNING INTENTION:
We are learning about the connection between creativity, innovation & invention.

How does our society value and encourage creativity, invention and innovation?

Big Questions:
What is creativity?
What is innovation?
What does creativity look like?

How important are they?
How does society value creativity and innovation?
What needs to be in place for people to be creative?
What is the difference between an inventor and an innovator?
Why is it important to develop creative and innovator skills at school?

What behaviours and skills are required to be a successful innovator?
How can we develop processes to use to develop our ideas?

So here is a clip to illustrate clearly what innovation may or may not be...

Lily's ANZAC Day Poem

Introducing Lily Graham - Room 10’s very talented word wizard! Here is her ANZAC Day poem written last week. ENJOY!

ANZAC Day
This was like no other ANZAC day!
Up at 4.30 so that we could get there by 5.
Today we remember the ones we lost at war.
The ones that gave there life for our county.
The family that lost someone special.
Lest we forget the soldiers all around the world.
This is a day to remember the ones we lost!’
The mother's words, ‘is he gone.’
You can shed tears that he is gone.
Or you can smile because he has lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that he will come back.
Or you can open your eyes and see all that he has left.
Your heart can be empty because you can't see him. `
Or you can be full of the love that you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday.
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember he and only that she is gone.
Or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
Or you can do what he would want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.
A mother's words, ‘is he gone?’
We all have different feelings on ANZAC day.
Lest we forget

Celebrating Our Learning

Congratulations to everyone in Room 10 who have been working hard all term with our Turangawaewae Inquiry learning. The artworks were incredible and inviting our whanau in to view them was a great way to share our success. Many thanks to Jordan and Zoe for creating this movie to recognise Sunshine and Isabella who were the winners of the audience vote that Jordan organised. Ka mau te wehi tamariki ma!

Class Councillors & Sports Captains Cycle 1

Music group 2

Room 10 have been super busy with Mrs McHattie making sweet music. I had the privilege of hearing the learning over the past few weeks with a presentation of two songs. All students were playing the guitar, reading music, thinking about their strum and singing at the same time. To say I was impressed was a really big understatement. Keep up the hard work Rm 10 - you make me proud every single day!

Sheppard Get Out And About! #Weareinspired

Last Friday our Sheppard house of 150 students were mobilised. We visited the Art Society exhibition at the Hastings Racecourse in the Cheval room. We were all impressed by the high quality of artworks exhibited. There were many different themes and mediums used. Looking closely at the artwork, a common theme of detailed and interesting works emerged. We stopped outside the Hastings library to look at the Pou which we will be creating during Te Kotahitanga week which is fast approaching. We then travelled to the Napier MTG museum to look at NZ artists. This museum was amazing and the exhibits were all so very different. The purpose of our trip around Hawke's Bay was to come away feeling inspired as we are fast approaching our Sheppard exhibition in our very own HNI hall. It is going to be epic!
