Car Wash!

As part of our Inquiry Change Makers project the Village party had an education policy of having better prizes for the PB4L draw.  They sent out a survey to identify what prizes the students wanted.  Then they met with Mrs Field who runs PB4L.  After this meeting they arranged a car wash off all the teacher cars.  Here is a video of their car wash.

Changemaker's Art

As part of our Inquiry "Change Makers" unit we looked at artists that made a change in their style of art.  Lizzy and Linda looked at Vincent Van Gogh's art work.

The class then drew inspiration from Starry Night and Starry Night over the Rhone to produce their own art work.

Here are some of our creations:

Inference Poems

We have been learning about making inferences in reading. After many practices of making an inference what a poem is about, we created our own. Here are Lizzy's What Am I poems.

What am I?
I am a tiny room.
I have many cousins and sisters.
Lots of long wooden things are always inside of me.

Part 2
I can be fluffy,
I can be in many different shapes.

Part 3
I either have buttons or a zip on me.
Humans use me me daily for all sorts of things.

What am I?

What am I?
I am a living thing.
Sometimes I am surrounded by humans.
I sit on pebbles.

Part 2

I can’t breath in oxygen.
Some people call me ugly,
and I have friends with me 24/7.

Part 3

I can be white, grey and even black.
People point at me,
and I have a sort of antennas,
I am not human.

What am I?

Change Maker's Reading

In reading, we were to research a famous NZ change maker.  This is Ffion's and Cassia's presentation on Sir James Wattie.

Election Research

We have the New Zealand general election on September 20 2014.  We have been researching what happens during an election as part of our change makers inquiry.  Below is Bailey's, Raymond's and Joe's research.

Elections

What is an election?
An election is a is a type of vote that men and women can vote on.  Which ever  party has the most votes wins.

Why do we have elections in NZ?
NZ HAVE VOTES so that every 3 years other people have a chance to have their say on things that are happening in our country. And so that other people can try and do better than the person before them.

What happens during an election in NZ?
There's a lot of parties here are some: Maoris, Green, Labour and National. MMP stands for Mixed Member Proportional. MMP is a voting system that people vote on which party they want to  win. If a party gets 40% of the votes and another  party gets 8% of the  and then 1 more party gets 3%, then they can join so that they run the country, this is called a coalition government.

Oh That's Good! No That's Bad!

This week we are focusing on writing for fun and entertainment.  Firstly we listened to the song "Oh That's Good, No That's Bad." by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs.

After listening to the song we watched this clip, which is actually a book, That's good! That's bad. by Margery Cuyler.

As a class we came up with a shared piece of writing using the title and format for Oh, that's good. No, that's bad.

Oh that’s good. No that’s bad.

Once upon a time, in a deep dark wood, in a teeny tiny cottage with a straw roof, lived a big, fat man. His name was Claude.  Claude realised he was getting too fat so he went for a run.
Oh, that’s good.
No, that’s bad.
A big buffalo came and chased after him while he was running.
Oh, that’s bad.
No, that’s good.
He was running so fast that he was sweating like a pig. His sweat caused a big puddle which the buffalo slipped on.
Oh, that’s good.
No, that’s bad.
The sweat was magical sweat which made the buffalo able to fly and he began chasing him again. To make things worse Claude happened to be wearing a grass hat.
Oh, that’s bad.
No, that’s good.
Claude ran past a swamp and a crocodile crawled out of the muddy swamp.  This scared the buffalo and the buffalo flew the other way.
Oh, that’s good.
No, that’s bad.
The crocodile chased Claude up a big, round, apple tree.
Oh, that’s bad.
No, that’s good.
Claude started slowly picking the apples and throwing them towards the hungry crocodile to scare the crocodile away.
Oh, that’s good.
No, that’s bad.
The branch that Claude was sitting on began to crack and split.  It shook and then snapped and Claude fell to the ground in a big heap.
Oh, that’s bad.
No, that’s good.
Claude landed directly on top of the crocodile. SPLAT! The crocodile died instantly from Claude’s extreme weight.
Oh, that’s good.
No, that’s bad.
The crocodile was a pet of his neighbour George.  George was an angry man with a habit of screaming and yelling over the smallest incident.  Claude knew George would be irate over the death of his crocodile.
Oh, that’s bad.
No, that’s awful!

Author's Purpose

This week in reading we are looking at why writers write and how this can help with our understanding of what we are reading.  As a class we brainstormed ideas:
- To use their imagination
- To entertain others
- For enjoyment
- To inspire other writers worldwide
- To teach us lessons and morals.
We then went on to learn about an author's purpose.  We read certain texts and established if they were to Persuade, Inform or Entertain.  We will use this knowledge in the future to help with understanding texts we are reading.

The Author’s Purpose is as easy as PIE.
Persuade: when an author convinces you to do or buy something.
Inform: when an author is giving you information about a topic or idea.

Entertain: when an author is trying to evoke an emotion from you.

COLOUR SYMPHONY

The excitement started to hit everyone like a flash of lightning. Everyone was getting restless just thinking about what we were about to do. People crowded around the new playground waiting for instructions.

The leader was handed a piece of paper and everyone raced to see what was written on it. We dashed to get the shiny tray and splashed the glossy milk so it just covered the tray. After that specks of food colouring was dotted onto the milk and made it look like a paintball gun had been shoot into the milk.

As Bruno tipped the oozing detergent into the paintball looking milk everyone yelled out “Woooaah!“, as the colours turned into little mini explosions. Each colour looked like a rainbow exploding. We came up with an exciting idea to start blowing onto the colours and they exploded even more.

The dishwashing liquid puts up a fight to break down the fat in the milk.  It breaks it down the same way that dishwashing detergent breaks down fat on our dishes.  When we dropped the slimy, green dishwashing liquid onto the colouring on the milk it attempted to break down the milk.  This made the colours explode and spiral around.

Overall the experiment worked very well and I am sure everyone would do it again. Everyone Had a very exciting time with this colour symphony.

Colour symphony!

Room 2 was a storm of excitement, we raced outside into the open air. We were all running around and some even jumping.  Afterwards we all had to sit in our reading groups on the bright green grass.  Everyone around me was wondering what was going to happen.  It looked like Miss Hooper came out with a few pieces of paper and with two helpers carefully holding, 4  bright shiny trays, milk and 3 food colouring dyes:blue, yellow and red. What is it we are going to do?

A few people were staring at Miss Hooper.  She walked towards the first reading group which is our group. Miss Hooper handed one of the mysterious  pieces of paper to everyone in our group. We were all so desperate to read what it said. On the paper the text said all sorts of information from how to make this experiment, to the ingredients you need and how it works.  Aramata, our leader, had to bring the bright shiny tray to fill the bottom of it with milk. She brought it back to our group with some food dye. Each of us had turns to drip and splotch 5-6 drops of the dye.’’Oh my gosh why did you do that?!’’ Joe shouted at Alex. Because Alex had pushed Joe’s arm, the food dye container landed in our experiment. Now the last ingredient, the liquid what is it going to do?

‘’WOAH’’ our group all yelled at once.  The liquid made the colours look like it went Boom! Swish! And Swoosh! The colours mixed over and under each other. It reminded me of a rainbow splatted into milk, or paint all mixed up together.they were all swirling in different places.once the experiment is finished we all cleaned up and tipped the colourful milk into the ditch.

Once the experiment is finished we all cleaned up and tipped the colourful milk into the ditch. Everyones tray looked very different in a unique way, ours was navy blue, others were yellow and someone elses was red! Now it is back to normal writing.

Welcome to Room 2 Blog

Welcome to Room 2.  We are a Year 7 class in Hillary House.

This term our inquiry unit is "I am Aotearoa/New Zealand... together we grow." We will look at HNI's school values and rules and what these look like in action. We will also look at what makes us unique as a person, HNI student and a resident/citizen of New Zealand (also looking at our multi-cultural society).
